ATHA Mayflower was fortunate to have Pam Bartlett speak to our group about Copyrights. Pam shared a wealth of information on this complex topic, and patiently answered our many questions.

Rose Ann Hunter s originally from Ohio and she began her journey as a fiber artist early by learning to knit in Junior High School. Rose Ann told us she started with rag rugs, showing her blue crocheted rag rug as an example. She’s been a textile structuralist for 37 years now and recalls going to the mills in New England where she found fabric she could knit with, stating, “you need to gauge your needles to the fabric.” She recycles fabrics that are sewn, knitted or crocheted into unusual and creative works of folk art.

The Mayflower Chapter enjoyed a festive meeting on December 14th. There were two gift exchanges – one for traditional gifts, and a second one for handmade items.

We enjoyed a busy “home bee” downstairs in the church.

We enjoyed a wonderful Big Bee. In addition to hosting several vendors, the group participated in raffling off many unique items, bringing in close to $500 for the Chapter. We appreciate the vendors who came to the meeting. We also extend a special thanks to Sharon Clarke and others who spent time making handmade items for the raffle.

We enjoyed a delightful visit from Susie Stephenson, who is well known for her primitive rug hooking style. Susie grew up in Nova Scotia as a child, learning to quilt, knit and embroider. Many years later, her mother suggested she try rug hooking, but with four children under the age of five, Susie didn’t think she had the time. However, her mother kept after her and taught her how to hook, and her husband built her a frame. Her rugs are unique to say the least, and they often incorporate drawings made by her children. Some of her rugs incorporate inspirational sayings.

Lois Dugle began hooking in 1963 and has been teaching since 1971. She spoke about adding embellishments to hooked pieces. Lois told us she hooks the piece, and then decides how to embellish it. She uses a variety of materials, including ribbon, sequin material, beads, fleece, shiny yarns, embroidery floss and wool roving, to name a few.
